4 Important Categories to Think About When You Start Your Blog

BY KAYLA KRASNOW, APOLLON EDITOR, SPRING 2021

Working on a blog or considering starting your own? The following practices will help your blog stand out.

1. CONTENT

  • Stay on topic.

  • Write with your target audience in mind. For, example, if you’re writing for Apollon Blog, your tone should be casual and focused on undergraduate student interests.

  • Include popular searched terms as keywords in your text to attract more visitors from your target audience.

2. FREQUENCY & TIMING

  • Have a consistent or set posting schedule.

  • Prioritize quality over quantity.

  • Followers need to know when to check your blog and will stop visiting or subscribing if new posts are rare.

  • Schedule regular posts on a weekly or monthly schedule, or post multiple times throughout the week.

  • Consider establishing set posting times. For example, 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, or hourly Monday-Friday.

  • Check on and update old posts so they do not become outdated, since posts may still attract visitors months or years after initial publishing.

3. FORMATTING

The Inverted Pyramid Approach

The Inverted Pyramid Approach

  • Write a headline that draws in readers.

  • Write using the inverted pyramid approach, with the most important parts in the first few sentences.

  • Use paragraph breaks and subheadings.

  • Keep in mind the 80/20 rule: 80 percent of readers only read the headlines in posts.

  • Include interactive elements, such as:

    • Hyperlinks

    • Images

    • GIFs

    • Videos

    • Infographics

4. CROSS PROMOTION

Use all available resources to help your blog grow, including:
• Social media, such as  Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn and other social media platforms to engage with your subscribers and update followers on new blog posts.
• Subscriber-based newsletters to keep your subscribers up to date on new posts and other blog happenings.
